The Origami Crane is in memory of Joel David Mutch, who lost his fight with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) on 11/27/17. Joel was an avid Origami hobbyist and made many beautiful art pieces for his family and friends.
In Japan, the crane is a mystical creature and is believed to live for a thousand years. The wings of the crane were believed to carry souls up to paradise. Mothers who pray for the protection of the crane’s wings for their children will recite the prayer:
“O flock of heavenly cranes
cover my child with your wings.”
I write this grief blog to support others who feel isolated by their journey through loss due to addiction and mental health.
